Pico Alto viewpoint is located, at an altitude of 587 metres, and it is Santa Maria's highest point. It offers a panoramic view over the whole island and allows the observation of different landforms - the western half of the island is lower, flat and yellowy-ochre in colour, while the eastern part is hilly and woody.
